After The Heros Welcome

As an American asked to serve, I was prepared to fight, to be wounded, to be captured and even prepared to die, but I was not prepared to be abandoned.? -Eugene Red McDaniel

After the Hero’s Welcome is the critically acclaimed war memoir that chronicles Dorothy H. McDaniel’s effort to find information on her POW husband, Eugene, and his subsequent release from a North Vietnam prison that prompted them both to fight to have the US Government publicly acknowledge the sacrifice of the POWs they believe were left behind in Southeast Asia and secure the release of those who could still be surviving.

Captain McDaniel was released from Hanoi in March 1973 and returned to active duty with the Navy. He retired in 1981 to conduct an unsuccessful campaign for Congress and then began the American Defense Foundation, devoted to patriotic causes. McDaniel describes the resistance of people in the administration to further action on the POW-MIA issue in language rich in belief for this cause.
